Phillips Announces Democratic 7th District House Election Bid


Phillips enters race - Former safety chief, sheriff to seek Dem nod for 7th District

Fred Phillips made it official Thursday, announcing his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the 7th District seat in the state House of Representatives.

A former state safety commissioner and Washington County sheriff, Phillips was lauded by Jonesborough Mayor Tobie Bledsoe for his 48 years of service to Washington County.

“red knows the importance of local government,” Bledsoe said. “And we need someone in Nashville who understands us and the small towns of Northeast Tennessee ... Someone who knows the importance of roads and schools.”

Phillips may face a challenge within his party for the nomination. Democrat Nancy Fischman has picked up qualifying papers for the race, but hasn’t made a final decision on her candidacy.
